📖 What a Media Buyer Does and How Much They Earn

A Media Buyer (buyer, media buyer) is the person who buys paid traffic in Facebook Ads, TikTok Ads, Google Ads, and Yandex Direct and sends it to affiliate offers. It’s a technically demanding role built around metrics like ROI, ROMI, CPA, and LTV. In our job board, media buyer roles are the most popular category, making up roughly a third of all active openings. Ad campaigns are optimized every day: testing creatives, audiences, bids, relaunches after bans. The buyer is directly responsible for whether the offer + traffic source + GEO campaign setup is profitable. If the setup takes off, there’s a bonus. If it doesn’t, you’ve burned the client’s or team’s budget. If you’re looking for a media buyer job, the entry barrier is higher than for an affiliate manager, but the income ceiling is noticeably higher too.

Salary

Junior roles pay a $1500–2500 base, Middle roles $3000–6000 base, and Senior or Team Lead roles $8000–15 000 plus 5–15% of team profit. About a third of openings list a transparent fixed salary, while two thirds offer base plus percentage. At high volume — from $300 000 in monthly ad spend — top buyers can reach $20 000+ in monthly income. That’s normal for people running several funnels at the same time and not getting wiped out by bans.

Frequently asked

What skills does a Media Buyer need?
Antidetect browsers (Octo, AdsPower, Dolphin), trackers (Keitaro, BeMob, Voluum), an understanding of ZRD (ad platform anti-fraud systems), and experience with PWA and apps. English strong enough to read documentation. Analytics: being able to calculate LTV, ROAS, and breakeven CPA. Excel and Google Sheets skills are a must — most team leads still run stats there, not inside trackers.
Can you get into media buying with no experience?
Yes, junior roles are open to people with basic English and an understanding of CPA models. Many teams take people on for training with a $800–1500 base for 2–3 months, then move them up to a proper junior role. Juniors are often hired after completing courses from affiliate networks or agencies — not because the certificate matters, but because it shows motivation and basic industry knowledge. If you mix up FTD and CPA in the interview, rejection is almost guaranteed.
Which verticals pay media buyers the most?
iGaming and crypto traditionally pay 30–50% more than nutra and e-commerce. That comes down to offer margins: a casino FTD payout can be $200–400, while crypto registration bonuses can go up to $500. But iGaming also has tougher regulation and accounts get banned faster, so experienced buyers are needed — no one is putting a junior straight onto gambling.
What does a typical media buyer’s workday look like?
Morning starts with analyzing overnight campaigns, especially if you’re running traffic to Western GEOs where it’s daytime. Then it’s uploading new creatives, checking accounts that are being warmed up, and seeing what got banned overnight. Offer tests, talking to the affiliate manager about payouts and caps. Closer to evening, you report on the day’s stats and adjust budgets for the next day. A buyer lives from one ZRD wave to the next.
Where can you grow from a media buyer role?
The standard career path is junior — middle — senior — team lead — head of media buying — CMO. At senior level, many people start their own team: hiring buyers under them and taking a percentage. Another option is moving into affiliate management or BizDev. Media buying experience is valued there because you understand how the partner on the other side actually thinks and works.
